BDSM Songs: Master and Servant by Depeche Mode

Put your dancing shoes on, because it is time for Monday Music again! Every Monday I share a song that either reflects a BDSM theme or is a sexy tune to fuck or play to. Last week’s pick was “Venus in Furs” by The Velvet Underground. A slow song that I think would be lovely to start a playscene with!

This week I picked “Master and Servant” by the amazing Depeche Mode. It is quite a confusing fact that many people still don’t know who these giants of music they are. They are basically the biggest synth band out there. Synth, you say? Yes, that is the kind of music that first used synthesizers, before the whole bleep blop techno of the 90s took over.

Dave Gahan and Martin Gore, the masterminds behind Depeche Mode, have never made a secret out of their interest in the kink scene and have been embraced as the music of choice for kink parties since the 1980s. Martin Gore even tried to make it fashionable to wear BDSM gear but uhm, it didn’t catch on! But their BDSM songs sure did.

The song “Master and Servant” has definitely a BDSM-feel to it, the lyrics basically speak for themselves (it is a song that also critcisizes modern day capitalism and inequality, but this not really the place to discuss that!). I have watched more than one scene playing out to that song on playparties. It has a great vibe to it. So go and have a listen. (also, watch the hilarious video. 80s music videos are fun!)

There’s a new game
We like to play you see
A game with added reality
You treat me like a dog
Get me down on my knees
We call it master and servant
We call it master and servant
It’s a lot like life
This play between the sheets
With you on top and me underneath
Forget all about equality
Let’s play master and servant
Let’s play master and servant
It’s a lot like life
And that’s what’s appealing
If you despise that throwaway feeling
From disposable fun
Then this is the one
Domination’s the name of the game
In bed or in life
They’re both just the same
Except in one you’re fulfilled
At the end of the day
Let’s play master and servant
Let’s play master and servant
Let’s play master and servant
Come on master and servant

I had a real thing for Dave Gahan in the video for “I Feel You’ ? ? Great song choice!

Love this song, although Enjoy the Silence is a personal favourite.

I remember this song so well, but at the time was oblivious to it’s BDSM theme (they were even on a Saturday kids’ TV show performing it, so un-PC!) I shall look out for your thoughtful Monday Music posts. I was wondering aloud on Twitter about a year ago whether Abba’s Name of the Game could be about a D/s relationship.

    • Lyrics are poetry so I think you can interpret them however you like. I like to think that art often is created in the reader’s mind, whatever the intention of the artist was, is not as important anymore once the words have reached another person’s mind. So I think that a lot of the songs that initially are about a D/s or BDSM theme, could be interpreted in less controversial ways. I don’t know that ABBA song, which is sad because I lived in Sweden for 12 years 😛
